Philosophy & Popular Culture
The fictional worlds of pop culture from films, TV series, video games, comics, etc. allow us to conduct thought experiments that allow us to alienate the ordinary and to reflect and sharpen our own "reality" in an intuitive way. They fascinate us and we discover the 'realism' in them, despite all their obvious deviations from our everyday knowledge. At the same time, their narrative performances contribute to the development of such everyday knowledge. Scientific theories can help us make these diffuse impressions tangible and reveal the reasons for our fascination.
The relationship between pop culture and science can be seen as a reciprocal one: Thus, on the one hand, pop-cultural worlds are examined from a scientifically guided approach with the help of scientific theories, models and methods. The field I am looking at here includes in particular gender-theoretical and philosophical approaches to science. On the other hand, from a scientifically reflective approach, it is precisely these theories, models and methods that can be discussed and developed at the potentials and limits of the other reality of pop cultural worlds.
